How Often Should I Go for HVAC Maintenance?

The answer to this question can vary. However, here is a general guide that helps you schedule timely HVAC maintenance.

  • For a system that cools and heats: in spring and fall
  • For cooling system only: at least once a year, before the winter seasons
  • For furnace: routine maintenance, before winter or at least once a year

Now that you know when to schedule cleaning your system, let’s take a look at how to maintain your HVAC system.

HVAC Maintenance Tips

Preventive measures like these can help you avoid costly repairs that can dent your budget.

Here are some important HVAC Services and maintenance tips to keep your HVAC repair costs low:

Paying attention to grinding, thumping, buzzing, or rattling with your HVAC system can signal a problem. Make sure you also check for a weak airflow, spotty cooling or heating, and puddles around your indoor unit.

Remember that you should replace air filters every two to three months. But you should also check them for clogs and dirt every month. It would help if you replaced air filters every 30 to 90 days, and they need to be checked every month for dirt and clogs. The frequency of replacing air filters increases if you have a large family or pets.

Dirty filters will cause your equipment to work harder than they should. This results in energy waste and even possible internal damage to the unit. Become familiar with the type of filter your system requires. If you have a washable filter that is reusable, make sure it is completely dry before replacing it.

Make sure you vacuum the vents frequently to keep dirt and dust from accumulating, obstructing the airflow. You should also check the airflow regularly to detect any problems with the vents. An experienced HVAC technician can identify any problems with the vents to improve airflow.

Improving indoor air quality starts with cleaning your humidifier reservoir regularly. The cleanliness of your humidifier will prevent the build-up of biological growth and mildew.

Create an HVAC preventive maintenance plan. Schedule a professional HVAC cleaning appointment so you can save both time and money. Contact us online or call us now at (805) 499-0448 for professional HVAC Maintenance. We have very competitive market rates when it comes to HVAC maintenance and tune-up of all well-known brands.

Most homeowners forget about the outside unit of your HVAC system. Make sure the unit is completely free of twigs, leaves, or debris. Cutting down shrubs and back plants also help you prevent any damage to your HVAC system. You can wipe don the outside and inside of the unit to eliminate dirt. In some cases, people also use a garden hose to wash it off, through a gentle spray.

All of the return registers/ grilles should be kept free of obstructions such as furniture, dirt, and debris. This will hinder proper airflow.

Unrestricted airflow to the outdoor unit is extremely important. Remove trash leaves, grass, and tree trimmings that are in close proximity. Any debris that collects around the unit will cause your unit to work harder than intended, resulting in more energy use and higher utility bills.

Periodically, place your thermostat on HEAT and move the temperature setting above room temperature. Listen for any unusual sounds. Contact us if you believe there may be a potential problem.

A heat pump or air conditioner should sit level. If you notice a shifting or settling of the ground in which your unit sits, re-level. Moisture/water must drain properly from the condensing unit.

If you have an annual maintenance agreement, please identify yourself as a preferred maintenance customer when contacting the team of Conejo Services.

Seasonal Maintenance Tips to Improve Your HVAC System Energy Efficiency

These seasonal and monthly maintenance tips are intended to improve your HVAC system energy efficiency and lower utility bills, and also to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter!

Summer & Spring HVAC Maintenance Tips

Here are some routine and easy maintenance tips for performing before spring and summer.

» Filter Replacement:

If you don’t replace these filters, dirty filters can pollute your breathing air.

» Installing a programmable thermostat:

Not only will installing a programmable thermostat save you money, it will also help the environment. You can ask our technicians about the different variety of thermostats you can install.

» Perform a Test Run:

Before the weather wants to heat up, run a test run of your system to ensure everything is right. Our HVAC professionals are just one call away, in case anything goes wrong.

» Clean the bathroom fans:

Since bathroom fans work hard throughout the year, checking them regularly is fairly important. Re-clean your bathroom fans, remove the covers, and use a mixture of water and soap to clean the fan. But remember to switch off the power before cleaning.

Fall and Winter HVAC Maintenance Tips

Here are a few tips to take care of your HVAC system before the fall and winter.

  • It’s crucial to clean your gutters, roof drains, and downspouts. Remove debris and any leaves that accumulate on your roof during the fall seasons. This accumulation of debris and leaves can lead to blockages in the roof draining system.
  • Use appropriate deicers on your concrete sidewalks. Many products can damage concrete surfaces. Any damage later shows up as flaking on the top layer of concrete. When the concrete is less than a year old, it needs more attention.
  • Regularly conduct a general review of your roof. Taking care of your gutters and roof drains will result in proper draining. Perform a general review of your roof. Check gutters and roof drains to make sure they are not clogged. Check whether ice or snow buildup is damaging flashing. You must pay attention to loose flashing to prepare for wind or springtime storms.
  • Winds lead to snow drifting, which is not a big problem if it’s on the side of the road. However, it is a different story if it is on your roof. Keep checking your roof to guarantee that ice or snow is not clogging or covering your drains. Also, check for deflections in the roof system. In some cases, you may get in touch with a structural engineer to take care of unusual deflect during heavy snow loads.

Furnace & Heater Maintenance

» Change Your Filter

One of the easiest and most important tips is to keep changing your filter. Clean filters deicers, enables air to circulate through the furnace and adds more life to your HVAC system. Remember to check the manufacturer’s recommendations to determine how often you should change the filter. Not only will you enhance your indoor air but also reduce your energy bills by a significant percentage.

» Follow Recommendations

A large number of furnaces in the U.S. are electric or natural gas. However, there are other options available such as geothermal, propane, and heat pump.

You must understand the type of system you have to maintain it properly. While you don’t have to maintain certain systems regularly, there are a few natural gas heating types that require regular maintenance and inspections. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to maintain your furnace.

» Put Safety First

Practicing safety measures is the most important thing when you decide to perform maintenance tasks other than basic filter changes. Always turn off the power of your furnace before you start anything. If you are not familiar with how to perform routine maintenance or cleaning, it is best to hire a professional service. Professional HVAC maintenance services offer cleaning, inspections, repairs, or tune-ups at affordable rates. Moreover, these services also save you from any injury or accident.

Service response was prompt. The electrician, Owen, is knowledgeable and thorough, addressing an unknown issue that saved us from a major loss had it not been resolved. I couldn’t be happier with the service I received at Conejo Services. I highly recommend them and have already done so to my neighbors.

I luckily found Conejo Plumbing on Yelp to service our tankless hot water heater, after my original plumber reneged on my lifetime contract. The plumber “Dier” was early for our appointment and after pleasantries was eager to solve the intermittent ignition issues we were experiencing. After an inspection it was noted that the igniter and flame rods had carbon and rust built up. Instead of soaking a customer and replacing our unit a simple service call got us back up and running. I can’t thank Conejo and “Dier” for the prompt service call and their professionalism. Suffice it to say Conejo will be my first call for plumbing issues and I look forward to seeing them in the future for HVAC calls as well. If you’re in need of a professional plumber I highly recommend Conejo as your first choice.

At this moment in time, I am very pleased. My air conditioning is working right on the day that I needed it to work. Both workers Fernando and I think Andre were efficient , polite and thorough. The only reason I hesitate is that I had a bad experience with another HVAC company and I just watching to make sure that AC works as efficient as it should. I do thank you for your immediate responses and showing up on time.

I live in a condo and have been trying to figure out where a slow leak was stemming from. Craig McConnell was incredibly helpful, thorough and knowledgeable and helped me to rule out every possibility of it stemming from my unit. I now have what I need to move forward with my HOA.
